Food for thought – five high-end homes with great kitchens

Where: On Westmoreland ridge on the west coast of Barbados, eight miles from Bridgetown and about 17 miles from Grantley Adams international airport.

What: A modern villa with five en suite bedrooms, an entertainment room, gym and study. The bathrooms feature limestone tiles from Portugal. The property also has a large covered terrace, and slate-lined infinity pool.

Why: The kitchen – by Italian design specialists Scavolini – has thick white quartz worktops and high-end stainless steel appliances, and enjoys views of Royal Westmoreland and beyond to the sea.

Villa Campo Verde, Umbria, Italy, €3m

Where: In the village of Eggi, in southern Umbria, 5km from the city of Spoleto and about 45 minutes’ drive from Perugia San Francesco d’Assisi airport.

What: A 17th-century villa with nine en suite bedrooms. The house has three large reception rooms, a pool and a walled herb garden.

Why: The large, well-equipped kitchen has been used as a cookery school by New Zealander celebrity chef Jo Seagar, who hosts cooking holidays there every summer.

Medieval château, Périgord, France, €2.4m

Where: In Périgord Noir, in southeast Dordogne, an hour’s drive from Bergerac Dordogne Périgord airport.

What: A four-bedroom 13th-century château, that was originally two houses. The property has many restored features, including stone spiral staircases and trefoil and mullioned windows.

Why: Currently run as a guest house, the château has a professional kitchen and separate carvery area. The kitchen was run for three seasons by Pierre Morat, now executive chef of the Alain Ducasse cookery school in Paris.

Where: On the banks of the New Croton reservoir in Westchester, New York state, 40 miles north of New York City and about an hour’s drive from JFK airport.

What: A five-bedroom, five-bathroom home of 8,000 sq ft set in 14 acres. The property comes with mature gardens, a tennis court and an outdoor pool.

Why: The kitchen – designed by bespoke kitchen fitter Smallbone – has views over the reservoir towards the Catskill Mountains. There is also a covered and heated outside dining space, and an outside bar and kitchen.

Battersea Bridge Road, London, UK, £2m

Where: A few minutes’ walk from Battersea Park in southwest London, 14 miles from Heathrow airport and 26 miles from Gatwick.

What: A six-bedroom, two-bathroom Victorian terraced house with two reception rooms, a family room, a study and a paved garden.

Why: Currently owned by cookery writer Rose Prince, the house has a 30ft kitchen with doors that open out on to the garden. Several years ago Prince set up a pop-up bakery in the kitchen selling to her neighbours. She now supplies baked goods to the Doodle Bar in Battersea and to Fortnum & Mason.
