The melodies may be somewhat lightweight – “Dub Dub”, “Al Green Song” and “Boogie Stupid” are little more than accurate descriptives – but the beats are mighty, the grooves well-crafted and John Scofield’s ultra-precise, sharp-edged lead guitar makes each note count. And Avi Bortnick’s neat samples and clicky rhythm guitar make this much more than a turn-up-and blow jam session. Andy Hess on bass guitar and either Adam Deitch or Louis Cato on drums are a powerhouse rhythm section, and John Medeski adds texture and atmosphere on organ.
