The Verdi bicentenary has been poorly served by record companies. This CD is not even new – it was first released five years ago – but it’s the best Verdi disc to come my way this year and deserves its attractive new packaging.
With alert accompaniments conducted by Oleg Caetani, Aliberti sings 21 top-notch arias from 12 operas, many of them lesser-known and all showcasing her majestic coloratura. Despite her soft-focus diction, each is a winner.
