As concerns grow about the future of Southern Cross’s 750-plus care homes, this interactive map shows the English local authority areas most dependent on the ailing company for the care of its frail and elderly.

The map is based on data provided by the Care Quality Commission, the care homes regulator, in response to Parliamentary questions which follow the company’s announcement last week it intends to hand back 47 of its homes to its landlords by October and off load further homes over the next five years.

As the map shows, council areas around Tyneside and on the western outskirts of London are most dependent on Southern Cross to provide care home places.

In North Tyneside, Hounslow, Southwark, Slough and Sunderland, over a quarter of all care home places are in Southern Cross homes – a total of 1,935 beds.

The council area with the highest absolute number of Southern Cross care home places is Durham, with 1,287 Southern Cross places – over a fifth of all care home places in the county.
