Lord Patten, chairman of the BBC Trust, has called for a “radical structural overhaul” of the corporation after two scandals led to the resignation of director general George Entwistle.

Mr Entwistle resigned over the weekend following the admission that he had not known about an investigation aired on Newsnight that mistakenly linked a senior political figure to child abuse.

The BBC was already under fire over its handling of sexual abuse allegations against the late TV presenter Jimmy Savile.

On Monday, BBC head of news Helen Boaden and her deputy Steve Mitchell stepped aside pending the results of the Pollard inquiry, which is looking at why a Newsnight investigation into Jimmy Savile was shelved, BBC news reported.

This interactive graphic profiles current and former senior executives caught up in the scandals.
