Passport-free travel, one of the cornerstones of European integration, is under threat.

The 1995 Schengen Agreement allows for the free movement of people and goods across a bloc that has gradually grown to include the majority of EU member states along with Switzerland, Norway and Iceland.

But concerns about immigration, exacerbated by the upheaval in north Africa and the economic crisis has seen demands for the strengthening of borders.
