Suits

Designers in New York meant business, at least judging by the number of suits on display.

Many were office-appropriate: Michael Kors, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu and Calvin Klein all showed sharply tailored, grey checked two-pieces.

For the more risk-taking executive, there was a bright purple suit at 3.1 Phillip Lim and a tomato red version with wide trousers at Gabriela Hearst (which would have been perfect for a female president).

Metallics

Despite a general anxiety about the Trump presidency, there were still some shiny happy people on the catwalks. Interpretations ranged from glam to grunge. Michael Kors didn’t hold back with his gathered gold leopard-effect gown, while Sies Marjan offered an indie-disco combination of metallicised peacock-blue leather kick flares with a sloppy Kurt Cobain-style jumper.

Shearling

For that warm, fuzzy feeling look no further than Coach, where designer Stuart Vevers’ shearling coats and trims added a cosy element to folky Americana. Baseball hats in sheepskin gave a quirky twist to the classic sporty accessory. There was also a recurrent 1970s vibe: at Tory Burch, a sheepskin-collared coat exuded a more uptown, ladylike polish while Creatures of the Wind’s knee-length gilet was pure Woodstock.
