The Lady Killer
Versatile vocalist Cee-Lo Green’s resumé goes from rapping with Atlanta’s Goodie Mob to fronting Gnarls Barkley’s zippy retro pop. The Lady Killer finds him branching out alone, lending his classic southern soulman’s voice to a pin-sharp recreation of soul’s 1960s/70s glory days.
“Gonna sound just the good old days,” he promises on “Old Fashioned”, and The Lady Killer sets about the task with gusto. Peppy Motown beats, horns and warm Al Green grooves abound, with Cee-Lo’s offbeat sensibility preventing the album from heading too far into heritage respectfulness.
