Jim Mickle’s horror film is stupendously dull

'We Are What We Are'

A cannibalistic-religious family in New York state. A stream that keeps filling up with bones. Girls disappearing by the half-dozen. We Are What We Are chunters on like some tribal storyteller trying to keep the tribe awake as the fire dies. But Jim Mickle’s horror film, from the director who did promisingly with Stake Land, is stupendously dull: dull with that blend of overloaded effect and under-supplied affect that bad horror alone truly offers.
