US stocks edge up in volatile session

Wall Street stocks climbed on Tuesday for the first time in three days as advances by financial and energy companies offset declines in healthcare stocks in a temperamental session of trading.

The S&P 500 financials index swung between gains and losses but by mid- afternoon bank and brokerage stocks had recovered thanks to a rare spot of good news from a pair of regional banks.
