Sarkozy takes wind out of teachers’ sails

Whistles blew and dance music thumped from a dozen sound systems as tens of thousands of teenagers and their teachers marched through Paris last week in protest at school job cuts.

But the demonstration, marking yet another day of teachers’ strikes and school closures – the 31st in seven years – lacked what reform-minded French governments have come to dread: the full-blown carnival factor.
