Oil and rice race to record levels

Oil extended its record-breaking run this week, touching the $117 level, while petrol, copper, tin and rice also achieved new peaks.

Panic-buying drove Thai rice prices, the global benchmark, to $1,000 a tonne this week as importers struggled to secure supplies. Key exporters have imposed restrictions, leading to concerns about supply shortages and the potential for widespread social unrest.
