How luxury hotels are giving Shanghai’s colonial-era architecture a new lease of life

For decades, Shanghai has happily buried its past in skyscrapers. But now the city has developed a new interest in its history.

State-owned companies, and the local governments that fund them, have spent billions of renminbi renovating some of the architectural gems of Shanghai’s colonial past -- and turning them into hotels.

Patti Waldmeir reports from Shanghai.
