The White House on Monday vowed to keep its “boot on the throat” of BP to make sure the UK energy group paid all costs relating to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, including compensation for fishermen whose livelihoods have been destroyed. BP’s shares opened down another 5 per cent on Tuesday as the oil group said attempts to stem the flow of oil spilling into the Gulf of Mexico had failed.
