Carlyle Capital Corp has $21.7 billion invested in AAA-rated residential mortgage backed securities, which have implicit guarantees from the US government. Helen Thomas, from the FT's Alphaville blog, assesses why such supposedly safe, but highly leveraged, investments are plunging in value.
