I've been a milkman now for 28 years. Before me, my uncle was a milkman for 50 years. My father was a milkman for 38 years.
I started helping my dad in 1979 as a 10-year-old milk boy helping him. I delivered my first pint of milk at 10 years old, 1979, Christmas Eve, six inches of snow. So I'm just carrying on in the family tradition.
Since the David Attenborough Blue Planet programme highlighting plastic waste, the interest in people having milk in reusable and recyclable glass bottles has absolutely been of phenomenal interest. And delivering to over 650 customers now per week. And out of all them new calls and of my customers, 90% of them are ordering glass.
I honestly think people just got a little bit lazy and were looking for that convenience. And now they're finding their way back to the British milkman. So once they have that first delivery of their milk in the glass bottle, they absolutely love it.
There is a trend to being a middle class type of a customer. But it depends what area you deliver to. But there is an interest across the board, I think. I think everybody's into recycling no matter if they're young or old.
But also to have your milk delivered in a zero emissions vehicle is just another plus. People are happy to see you and are interested in what you're doing. They mentioned the new vehicle, they mention the glass bottle, they mention the plastic. All these things are issues to people, I think, and they see that I'm involved and engaged with all of those issues. The milkman is back, yes.
