MARIO MONTI: Italian election victor must reform economy

Apr 8: Unless major structural reform of the economy takes place, Italian business will not be able to compete properly in the global economy despite its flair for "creative ingenuity", according to Mario Monti, president of Bocconi University and former EU commissioner. He tells Adrian Michaels, FT Milan correspondent, that Italian politicians on all sides have not done enough to increase liberalisation and competition, nor to improve labour market flexibility and infrastructure. He says the winner of the election must act now. The interview took place at a gathering of business leaders organised by The European House Ambrosetti, a management consultancy.
