Shares in Bradford & Bingley surged higher after it emerged that Clive Cowdery and four of Britain's largest institutional investors were fighting to scupper the bank's rescue recapitalisation as part of an audacious plan to roll up a number of the UK's struggling smaller lenders into a single stronger institution.
