May 3: Kim Jong-il visits China

Reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-il makes his first trip abroad since a suspected stroke in 2008. Kim visited China, his only major ally, staying at the Furama hotel in Dalian where increased security involved a strong police presence and a cordon around the premises. Rare photographs of the leader show him stepping into a car outside his hotel. Kim's trip comes at a precarious time for the North's already struggling economy.
