Hi, I'm Stuart Vevers, and I'm the creative director of Coach. I'd like to share with you our Keith Haring collaboration from spring 2018.
Keith Haring is optimistic, New York City cool, and inclusive. When I first saw Keith Haring's work, I don't know whether I knew it was art. It was just like this immediate attraction. I think there's something optimistic and joyful about his work.
I mean, this is a quintessential Coach piece, the all-American biker jacket. This was really inspired by when Keith Haring would actually, with his friends, he would paint their clothes.
We applied Haring's graphics on top of one of our nostalgic prairie prints, which is something that we've become known for. And I felt it was important to connect our two worlds to create something that felt new and fresh, and something that people hadn't seen before in Haring's work.
One of my favourites is the dog being zapped by the flying saucer. We layered that onto the Coach signature, which is actually the first time I've played with this graphic since I joined Coach.
My favourite quote from Haring is, "art is for everyone." That philosophy, I felt, sits really well with Coach. There's something about Keith Haring's philosophy and what we believe in at Coach, that idea of inclusivity, that I felt connected really well.
I wanted to celebrate New York City creativity. The runway show is a moment for me to really push myself and to push my boundaries, and to be creative. And so I wanted to celebrate that in my work, but also to reference one of the great New York creatives.
