As around the spring-summer 2018 Ready-To-Wear kicks off with New York Fashion Week. The trends are already emerging. One of the most prominent trends was the sporty cheerleader. Calvin Klein, Creative Director at Raf Simmons deconstructed pom-poms and turned them into fringed cocktail dresses as a continuation of his fascination with Americana. Ralph Lauren, who is also known for exploring classic American themes gave football shirts some evening razzle and covered them in sequins. Fenty Puma, designed by Rihanna and public school, the wholesome varsity vibe came with the streetwear twist via hot-pants, hoodies, and drawstring, and lace detailing.
Is it the Republican influence or the handmade style effect? Whatever the reason, red was everywhere in New York. Victoria Beckham showed a fluid red silk shirt dress. Which would work for dusk till dusk. Prabal Gurung's wet look dress with cutaway sides is more daring. And Sies Marjan offered a fuzzy red coat, which combined the craziness of a Sesame Street character with an offbeat glamour. Remind us that red commands attention like no other colour everywhere. From Ralph Lauren's Ferrari scarlet ball dress, shown alongside actual supercars parked on the catwalk. To Calvin Klein's horror movie inspired blood red Mac. And Helmut Lang's wet look coat with fetish inspired straps.
Several designers at New York Fashion Week used artist's work in their collections. Raf Simmons at Calvin Klein deployed Warhol images on t-shirts and dresses. And combined these with paint splattered fabrics. At Coach, Keith Haring's dancing figures and hearts wiggled their way onto jackets, dresses, and bags. Other designers showed off their paisley prints. Carolina Herrera went to the Museum of Modern Art. Tory Burch gave a nod to the late interior designer David Hicks. And Oscar de La Renta showed at Sotheby's, where looks were splattered with paint blob embroideries and worn with paint brush heals.
Glitter rules for spring-summer '18. This trend was picked up by labels named for the high octane red carpet glamour, such as Carolina Herrera, Oscar de La Renta, and Tom Ford. Carolina Herrera's red and pink sequin gown had the ease of the 1920s flapper dress While Tom Ford's high-neck crystal mini-dresses and tops had the disco shimmer of a glitter ball. Victoria Beckham made ruby slippers fit for a trip to the Emerald City. And at Coach, Stuart Vevers covered the whole set in silver glitter and sent out sparkly disco boots.
