'Make or break' for UK striking unions
British public sector unions are calling out their members for strikes which will hit schools and travellers particularly hard. Workers are protesting against plans to reform their pensions, in most cases by increasing the contributions they make. The government wants to raise pension contributions by public sector workers by an average of 3.2 percentage points, although those on incomes under £15,000 are exempt. Brian Groom, employment editor, tells Richard Edgar why he thinks the outcome of the strike could have far wider ramifications than just settling this dispute.
