A total eclipse of the Moon has taken place right across North and South America, and over the Atlantic to the western fringes of Europe. Earth is now passing between Sun and Moon. The full Moon is gradually changing colour from a glistening white glow, into a rather pale orange, red colour.
That's because the Earth is blocking the direct sunlight from reaching the Moon's surface. The light that is getting to the Moon has passed through the Earth's atmosphere, been bent and refracted around it. You'll have to wait until early 2021 for the next blood moon.
