May 7: Pro-Hizbollah strike shuts Beirut

Opposition supporters set cars and tyres ablaze to block the main road to Beirut's international airport, where the strike has led to the suspension of air traffic. Unions are calling for higher wages to help offset steep rises in the cost of food, fuel and other goods. The industrial action is backed by Lebanon's Hizbollah-led opposition, which is locked in a power struggle with the US-backed government.
