Retail sales figures from the British Retail Consortium suggest that consumer spending has held up strongly over the Christmas and New Year period. At the same time inflation data suggest that the increases in prices that are being seen in manufacturing are yet to filter through to consumers - but are probably on the way. Chris Giles, economics editor, tells Richard Edgar how he interprets the data and what to look for in tomorrow's Bank of England inflation report.
