Marks and Spencer posted quarterly underlying sales growth in the UK for the first time in more than two years on Wednesday. In spite of this recovery, however, the retailer's performance in the run-up to Christmas was still markedly inferior to John Lewis's strong trading figures, released a day earlier. The figures come as consumer confidence has dipped again. Neil Buckley looks at the trends.
