Oct 1: Crowds turn out for Madrid Olympic bid

Thousands of people have created a human mosaic in support of Madrid's bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games, with the campaign led by Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia. Madrid has never held a summer games before but was one of five shortlisted candidate cities for the 2012 Olympics, which were eventually awarded to London. The Spanish capital has the highest support among all bid cities, with 84.9 per cent of Madrid's residents backing the bid.
