Dec 16: Europe's currency comes of age

The euro was introduced at the stroke of midnight on 1st January 1999, displacing the eleven currencies of the original members. As it approaches its tenth birthday, Ralph Atkins, Financial Times bureau chief in Frankfurt, examines how the currency is faring. He speaks to Jean-Claude Trichet of the ECB; Hans Tietmeyer, former president of the Bundesbank and one of the architects of the currency; and Nicolaus Heinen, eurozone analyst at Deutsche Bank to find out their estimation of the strengths and weaknesses of the euro.
