Up to 50bn tonnes of sand a year is mined, dredged and even stolen to satisfy the global appetite for infrastructure, according to the UN. FT science commentator Anjana Ahuja says it’s disappearing faster than it can be replenished, cutting biodiversity, destroying fishing communities, and increasing flooding risks
