Joe Saluzzi, co-head of equity trading at Themis Trading, an institutional agency brokerage firm, says too much reliance on any one subset of investor class can be dangerous. "When everybody's following the same strategy you do need to be concerned as to what are the ramifications if that 70 per cent disappears." He says recent events in the equity markets, such as the March 2009 sell off, should be studied to determine the role high frequency traders played.
