Inflation fell sharply in September to its lowest level in five years, leaving sterling under fresh pressure against major currencies. Inflation as measured by the consumer price index dropped to an annual rate of 1.1 per cent last month, down from 1.6 per cent in August. Chris Giles, economics editor, explains why the September number is important and considers the outlook for inflation.
