Hydropower’s urgent call to action
It is the largest renewable energy source on the planet, but hydropower holds much untapped potential.
Eddie Rich does not deny that the hydropower industry is still a long way off where it needs to be by 2040, but he also knows how far hydropower has come in the past 50 years.
“From inside the hydropower industry, it doesn't feel like hydropower is an old technology,” says Rich, who is CEO of the International Hydropower Association (IHA). “Yes, it's been around a long time, but there have been so many technological developments to optimize hydropower and its relationship with wind and solar.”
“We still have a way to go to communicate that renewables working together is what is needed for the energy transition,” he says.
So how can we realise this potential for the long run? In this interview, Rich joins Megan Wright, senior editor at Longitude, a Financial Times company, to talk about where the industry must go next.
