The story is child’s play: good fairies versus bad fairies. The former, led by Beyoncé-voiced Queen Tara, are into life, flowers and greenery; the latter, the Boggans, prefer rot, dust and decay.
Into their miniature world stumbles Mary Katherine, who has issues with her dad. You know those issues will be resolved by the end, and which side will win, and that, this being a 3D flick, there’ll be swooping, lunging action sequences. But so what? The story’s lively, and the digimation, bursting with botanical detail, is borderline miraculous. You could ask for more from a family film – something more nuanced, say – but then some people are never satisfied.
