Roland Emmerich, 2013

After blowing up the White House in Independence Day, Roland Emmerich does it again. This time, it’s not aliens or North Koreans (as in last year’s near-identical Olympus Has Fallen), but neo-cons and white supremacists.

Jamie Foxx is an Obama-like prez: basketball-crazy and trying to quit smoking. It’s less violent, less po-faced than Olympus – and wittier too, making it easier to stomach the clichés: the patriotic schmaltz, tense situation room countdowns and Channing Tatum as a rogue agent dodging bullets in a Die Hard vest.
