Quinta de Manique, Estoril, Portugal, €7m

Where: In the village of Manique, on Portugal’s west coast, 5km from Cascais and 18km from Lisbon international airport.

What: A listed estate, dating back to the 17th century, that has entertained a number of royal families who settled in Portugal after the second world war, including the kings of Italy, Spain and Romania. Set in about 20 acres, the 3,200 sq metre palace is in need of renovation and has 13 bedrooms, a number of annexes, a chapel, and an acre of formal gardens.

Why: Most of the land beyond the gardens is agricultural, with water delivered by an aqueduct from a nearby spring. There are a number of orchards, producing lemons, oranges, tangerines, figs and pears.

Where: In the southwest of England, five miles from the harbour town of Fowey. Flights to London take an hour from Newquay airport, 45 minutes away.

What: A four-bedroom property dating back to the 15th century, with an attached two-bedroom “Apple Barn”, and various outbuildings, all in 32 acres.

Why: The grounds include an acre of orchards, which produce three tons of apples a year, including the Blenheim Orange variety. The current owners sell their fruit to the cider maker Cornish Orchards.

Where: In central Mallorca, 16 miles or 30 minutes’ drive from Palma airport.

What: A traditional Mallorcan finca (farmhouse), built in 1904, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a separate one-bedroom guest house, set in 3.7 acres of land. The main house was fully renovated in 2012.

Why: The grounds include an orchard measuring about 600 sq m, with citrus, mandarin, orange and grapefruit trees, all irrigated from a small central pond.

Where: In the Vaucluse region of southeast France, close to the village of Visan, 60km north of Avignon international airport.

What: A 300-year-old Provençal farmhouse, renovated in 2011, with views over the Alps and Mont Ventoux. The main property has six en suite bedrooms and a separate three-bedroom caretaker’s/guest house, with a swimming pool, walled garden, outbuildings and a vineyard, all set in about 12 acres.

Why: Almost two acres are given over to cherry, peach, apple, pear, fig, apricot, plum and damson trees, which are used to make jams, jellies and puddings for the owners.

Where: Near the town of Copake, almost equidistant between New York City and Boston, near the New York Massachusetts state boundary, about 150 miles from either JFK or Boston Logan international airports.

What: A four-bedroom hilltop property with 4,000 sq ft of living space, and a separate 1,200 sq ft studio, featuring a bedroom and en suite bathroom, all set within 20 acres of grounds.

Why: A small, established orchard of 12 trees provides peaches, apples and plums, used by the current owners to make chutneys and jams.
