Sir, The FT Weekend of April 19 included a half-page advertisement from Pakistan Railways for what appears to be high-speed rail link between its capital and two other cities.

Against that background, is it beyond the wit of the US to get its act together and replace the rickety old Amtrak line and the tired rolling stock between Washington DC and New York? Or is it that train journeys – even high-speed ones – are infra dig for those people who “really matter” in the US?
