We surely must add ‘The American People’

From Mr John W Ward.

Sir, I recollect, some 40 or so years ago, a light-hearted study of the egocentricity of the leading politicians of the day. The researchers simply counted the usage of the first personal pronoun, both singular and plural.

Surprisingly Charles de Gaulle scored remarkably low on this scale. After scratching their heads the researchers added La France (and perhaps L’etat) to the tally and de Gaulle rose to his intuitively rightful place at the top of the table.

If we apply this to US politicians we surely must add “The American People”.
