Practising physicians are increasingly being required to have business know-how, especially in the US, where the healthcare system is changing rapidly. To meet the demand, the Kelley school of business at Indiana University is launching a Business of Medicine MBA.
The degree will run over two years and combine face-to-face classroom study with online learning. The programme will begin in September 2013.
The specialised MBA incorporates a curriculum similar to that of the Kelley school’s full-time programme, covering the usual topics such as economics, strategy and marketing, but will have specialised courses covering healthcare themes. The Kelley school will draw on the expertise of its Center for the Business of Life Sciences, founded in 2008, to teach the programme.
The Business of Medicine MBA bridges the traditional divide between management and medicine, says Idalene Kesner, interim dean of the Kelley School of Business. “With this degree, physician leaders will emerge with the full skillset to transform individual institutions, the broad healthcare field and, most important, patient outcomes.”
Kelley has made a strong name for itself in developing online learning. Fifty per cent of the Business of Medicine will be taught online, and the other 50 per cent through weekend residences.
