Mea Maxima Culpa – DVD review

Alex Gibney, 2012

Decades of reports on child sex abuse scandals in the Catholic church may have dulled our sense of outrage – Alex Gibney’s documentary brings it all back. He begins with victims from a Milwaukee school for deaf children who were not content just to rely on divine retribution, but the shameful trail of culpability and cover-up leads all the way to the Vatican. The tone remains admirably sober even in the face of breathtaking hypocrisy from an institution itself still unwilling to confess its sins.
