Beastie Boys: Hot Sauce Committee II

Hot Sauce Committee II

There comes a time when a veteran band, like an old dog, realises the time to learn new tricks is over. Best stick with trusted old favourites, like chasing balls or barking at the doorbell. That’s what the Beastie Boys wisely do on Hot Sauce Committee II.

“Here we go again,” Ad-Rock yaps, still a brat-rap recidivist at 44, as boom-bap beats and quaking bass turn the clock back to 1994’s Ill Communication. All the staples are present: wonky electronics, hardcore punk/rap crossovers, a daft routine about the name Larry, a funky instrumental, a rap battle with Nas, magnificent beat-making. Most heartening is the sound of MCA, recovering from throat cancer, hoarsely rapping away in observance of the first law of old school hip-hop: tick tock, you don’t stop.
