Don Weller formed the rocking and rootsy jazz quartet Major Surgery in 1971 to showcase for his muscular tenor sax entwined with Jimmy Roche’s sinewy guitar on an all-original jazz-rock repertoire.

The Croydon-based band’s steamy gigs were legendary, and this reissue from 1976, their only recording, captures the high energy levels, assured playing and focused abandon of their live performances.

Weller is on storming form, Roche not far behind, and the bass and drum rhythm section tight and raw.

Bonus track “Calypso Reg” rounds out a great album.
