Natalie Merchant: Natalie Merchant – review

The former frontwoman of 10,000 Maniacs has had an extended hiatus in her solo career, broken only by an ambitious 2010 record setting Victorian children’s verse.

Something of that spirit persists on her own compositions here, from the chamber string quartets to the nursery-rhyminess of “Black Sheep” – although along with “It’s A-Coming” and “Go Down, Moses”, it has an irresistible gospel groove.
