Mike Walker’s acerbic picks, strums and funky rhythm guitar provide an unexpected opening for a band usually associated with gentler jazz subtleties. Adam Nussbaum’s backbeats kick along, bassist Steve Swallow deftly underpins the pulse, and the Anglo American combo’s close interplay soon comes into view.

Then, it’s business as usual, with pianist Gwilym Simcock sensitive and fluent on the ballad, “Just to See You” and bustling and brisk on “Barber Blues”. Walker’s soulful warmth juxtaposed to the cranky pre-recorded rant of “Crank of Cam” is an appealing oddity.
