Jude Law’s safe-cracker Dom is all mouth and no trousers – literally so in a pants-down prologue where he delivers an ode to his own penis.

Out of jail after 12 years, Dom hooks up with a fellow ex-con (Richard E Grant) to seek his overdue booty and to bond with his estranged daughter. With mutton-chop sideburns and a mockney accent, Law sets out to play a loveable rogue in the mould of Michael Caine’s Alfie (whom Law played in the 2004 remake).

Yet while Dom has had “the shittiest luck in the history of shitty luck”, his endless expletives and violence jar with the film’s quieter, supposedly “emotional” moments and fail to win our sympathy.
