“Relations among bands vary,” Shearwater’s Jonathan Meiburg writes in Fellow Travellers’ sleeve notes, about touring with other groups. “Sometimes you click, sometimes you don’t.”
Meiburg’s intriguing essay introduces a set of covers of songs by acts with whom Shearwater have toured, from Coldplay’s grand-scale “Hurts Like Heaven” to St Vincent’s quirky “Cheerleader”, all filtered through the Texan band’s ornate roots-rock, topped by Meiburg’s dramatic (sometimes overdramatic) vocals. It clicks more often than not.
