The line-up: British designers to watch from Salone del Mobile, Milan 2013
New approaches to traditional design are common throughout the recent Milan design fair but Paul Cocksedge’s floating shade for Flos stood out, writes Victoria Maw. Hung from an invisible cable and lit from below by an LED floor fitting, it is part floor lamp, part pendant. He says the idea was one of “subtraction”, removing ugly wires and making the design “much more about the idea of lightness and illumination”.
Devon-based Young & Norgate took centre stage in Milan when Vivienne Westwood teamed up with 100% Design to showcase British furniture-making. The young brand, which adopts a pared-back aesthetic, displayed a black walnut and Formica bedside table as well as a leather-lined writing desk with a “clamshell construction”, allowing the inner workings to be seen from the outside. Neat.
The furniture fair offered platforms for new designers such as Hannah Waldron, who showed her “Map Tapestries”, visual memories of journeys woven in silk, linen and cotton. She is interested in “how experiences can be documented and mapped”. As well as visual memories, such as a glimpse of a landscape seen from a bullet train, she also depicts sensations – a hot spring or the taste of a meal.
