England have dropped wicketkeeper Matt Prior for next month’s tour of New Zealand after he spilled a number of catches in the series against Sri Lanka. Tim Ambrose, the uncapped Warwickshire keeper, was selected instead. Ambrose, 25, is expected to play in the Tests, with Durham’s Phil Mustard the likely one-day side wicketkeeper.

Middlesex opening batsman Andrew Strauss, who was omitted from the Sri Lanka tour, was recalled to the 16-man Test squad.

Kent off-spinner James Tredwell was called up for the one-day squad for the first time while Essex all-rounder Ravi Bopara was dropped from the Test squad but included in the limited overs side.

Test squad: Vaughan (capt), Ambrose, Anderson, Bell, Broad, Collingwood, Cook, Harmison, Hoggard, Mustard, Panesar, Pietersen, Shah, Sidebottom, Strauss, Swann.

One-day squad: Collingwood (capt), Ambrose, Anderson, Bell, Bopara, Broad, Cook, Mascarenhas, Mustard, Pietersen, Shah, Sidebottom, Swann, Tredwell, Tremlett, Wright.
