Sir, While appreciating the fact of Hugh Masekela’s obituary (“ Anti-apartheid activist kidnapped by music”, January 27) I feel that the eulogies of the following week appear to ignore the many fine hardworking musicians who did not have the opportunity to reach the bright lights of the northern hemisphere.
Instead they remained, practising their art under trying circumstances after the Group Areas Act forbade them to work in clubs and theatres and hotels in the privileged parts of our cities. They took menial jobs to support their families and stayed in our country and continued to do what they loved.
