Jealousy – film review

Philippe Garrel’s Jealousy arrives 10 months after praise and premiere at the Venice Film Festival. A black-and-white sketch of broken love lives – partly inspired by Garrel’s own family – it lasts 75 minutes. The plot is patchy; later scenes search for a purpose. But there are searing truths too. The costs of self-fulfilment or egotism (choose your value judgment) in the actor hero, played by Garrel’s son Louis, are rupture with a resentful partner, followed by a new lover (Anna Mouglalis) who catalyses rather than comforts his crises of soul. The portrait of the little daughter (Olga Milshtein) may be the best of all. A tot in a tug of war; determined to stay whole even as her elders struggle and fail.
