Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra: Portrait in Seven Shades

Portrait in Seven Shades

Each of the seven movements of Ted Nash’s orchestral jazz tour de force is dedicated to a modernist painter – “Dali” splays bendy horns over an awkward time signature; “Picasso” splices romance with bullfighting emotions; a warm song-form ballad provides sanctuary for the troubled Van Gogh.

There are buccaneering solos, plangent soliloquies and echoes of Ellington, Minus and Gil Evans. But the repeated sequences of big band tradition are long gone as Nash works his many influences into richly detailed, and sometimes breathtaking, linear structures.
